Dragon Quest VIII has some of the best writing on ps2 period. Rogue Galaxy and Radiata Stories are good contenders. As much as I love the SMT games that.

Top 10 Hidden JRPG Gems (PS2)

Not the best story although some of them are interesting but. That gives you characters with more depth than usual which can help give more variety in the games you play. Portable has much better social links, but at the expense of losing the ability to walk around and changing all story scenes to visual novel format. I wouldn't say that its writing on paper is necessarily great. But of course. If it's gonna be a problem then you should just leave the room. The only downside is you need to grind quite a bit due to the aforementioned difficulty. I absolutely fell in love with the game. The main female characters are pretty well developed and the writing is at least competent. Users may also view the site-wide Reddit rules here. I kept Googling "Radiata Stories 2" a few times a year for what must have been a decade. I'm sick of P3-P4 rehashing and I'm getting sick of P5 rehashing already. Can they even make em like they used to though? Final fantasy X is a good one. Too much "friendship is power" to take it seriously, the writing definitely made is worse. DDS is based on Hindu mythology and Lore and I think nocturne includes Lore from all cultures, shame that I could never finish the games for to their difficulty. I've never played anything quite like it before or since. It's all quite good though. FFX is the big one. The sense of eventual dread and just scraping by, barely surviving from encounter to encounter is perfectly represented through the gameplay mechanics, which leaves it feeling very deliberate and consistent in a way that most games don't. Persona 4 is amazing, although if possible go for golden instead. Shadow Hearts and it's sequel, Covenant. My favorite one I haven't seen here yet is Wild Arms 3. It opened so many possibilities. Today, some 15 years later, it still comes up kinda often- "This isn't gonna be like the time you ruined my game, is it? Log in or sign up in seconds. I agree that its not worthy of the BoF series but its great on its own just change name or maybe Breath of Fire : a dragon quarter and continue bof5 following its usual style and the series might not die. It's a real shame there's no definitive version of P3. But it really is the oppressive survival horror-esque atmosphere that is reinforced throughout the entire experience, even the gameplay mechanics that makes it really unique. An excellent game. And there's also an incredible amount of reading material concerning quite literally the universe and tons of interactables in the world that give you additional information. What elevates it though is that every part of the game reinforces the story premise and characterization. I've always heard that the biggest problem of that game is that fact that is has Breath of Fire in its name. When I beat it my friend was watching me play. FF XII for me. The cliffhanger of the first one is still one of my favorite endings of a JRPG. Yeah the writing in DQ isn't the highlight, it's pretty utilitarian and there's not an incredible amount of lore or anything to really flesh out the universe past the plot. Ah a man of culture I see. Im hoping with P5's success, they deliver a definitive HD version of P3. Users can add details, analysis, questions, their own opinions, or other worthwhile content to avoid it being low effort. It deserves it's own name, I agree. Persona 3 is good too. Please check our Upcoming Releases Wiki Page as well and help add info if you would like. It's pretty great. I got the PSP version and tried to play through with the female character, but had I hard time fully enjoying it and never finished, because going from actually walking around as the MC during the social part to just controlling a dot with still images wasn't doing it for me. Played the PSP version a bunch of years ago but stopped when I realized what I was missing from the original game. Let them move the fuck on. I love Shadow Hearts for how it often breaks convention with absurdity and humor whilst still delivering a solid narrative. Submit a new link. Use of this site constitutes acceptance of our User Agreement and Privacy Policy. I think the first two Drakengard games give it a run for its money but the gameplay for those two are ass. I mean if you like them that's fine but there's simply a lot better stuff out there to play. Yeah, it's not worthy of the name because the rest of the BoF series is mediocre trash. I feel like the second game was rushed and the last arc suffered from that. The nuances and politics really make this a compelling story. Want to join? I had pre-warned him I was about to beat it and that if he wanted to sit here and watch then he was NOT allowed to talk while I watched the ending. They're slow paced with generic stories and bland combat. PSP would be much better for a replay imo. It isn't a bad thing but it is cliched for the most part. Stopped playing in the last dungeon of the 2nd game and just watched the rest on Youtube. Flairing your post is not currently mandatory but is highly encouraged to organize the subreddit's posts and make searches easier ex: flair search for most recent news. I recently got it on ps4 and am having a blast with it currently! The interest is there. Unrelated content will be removed. All rights reserved. I also liked how each playthrough unlocks a bit more content. I've only played the first two and although I wouldn't say that the story is amazing, it does feel pretty intimate my dictionary tells me you can use intimist for art in English but I've never heard it , which is at least a bit interesting for its unusualness. JRPG comments. Rogue Galaxy and Radiata Stories are good contenders. Submit a new text post.{/INSERTKEYS}{/PARAGRAPH} At this point it'd sell well. I love how detailed the dictionary entries were. They're really not. They described not only lifeforms but the science in those civilizations as well symbology. WA3 has a fine enough story I guess and does a decent job averting tropes, but the dialogue itself is honestly atrocious enough that I would never think to put it on a list of 'best-written games'. On my list. Shadow Hearts 2 has a very special kind of writing. If your post disappears, please contact the moderators in modmail to see if it got caught in the spam filter or for other questions or concerns. Please no. Could never get into those. It takes some getting used to, but the battle system really grew on me, and there's a sort of claustrophobic sense of dread I haven't encountered in another rpg. It's a completely different type of experience from pretty much any other JRPG you can think of- it's tense, stressful and exhilarating, which is part of the reason why it ends up being divisive since a lot of people don't necessarily want that kind of experience when playing a JRPG. For the most part nobody ever talks like a human or has a conversation that's not either an exposition dump or, again, talking about their ideals. The characters and their dialogue are generally pretty sober and well-rounded in the series. The story telling is good though. Our rules page is here with further clarifications here. I'm going to give an unorthodox answer. Richard Honeywood! I also like dragon quest VIII a ton. {PARAGRAPH}{INSERTKEYS}Developers or users sharing a game should also elaborate their post with a proper description. Persona 3 Remastered was on the list. You two read my mind. Everyone is more or less a walking ideal or set of ideals and their dialogue exists solely to talk about those ideals. Users who don't fulfill this requirement may use the Weekly Media Thread. Plus the gameplay and world are top notch. I know the PSP version had to downgraded, but between that downgrade and other games coming out I ended up not finishing it sadly. Very interesting characters with awesome character developments, and the story by far is the most interesting and mature. The story goes very interesting places too.
